In 2005, Faithless released 'Forever Faithless: The Greatest Hits,' an album that reached No.1 on the UK Album Charts and marked a major milestone in the band’s career.
On behalf of this release, the band embarked on an extensive touring cycle, bringing them back on the road across Europe. As part of that tour, Faithless returned to Greece, playing in Athens at the iconic Lycabettus Theatre on June 8th, 2005, while one day earlier they played in Thessaloniki at Principal Club Theatre.
It’s worth noting that Faithless’ very first live appearance in Greece took place back in 1999, at the legendary Rodon Live Club - a historic venue that closed its doors in 2005, the same year the band released their 'Greatest Hits' album and returned to Greece on tour. That '99 show remains a historic and unforgettable moment for those who experienced it.
Regarding the '05 Athens performance, it was the first time I saw them. The show was opened by Marsheaux, an established Greek electropop duo, setting the stage perfectly for the night ahead.
What I remember most is the moment when 'Insomnia,' kicked in. The crowd completely erupted, lifting the atmosphere to another level, and that explosion of energy didn’t fade until the very end of the concert. A crazy moment was also with 'We Come 1' with all of us screaming "ONE!" and Maxi Jazz replying back "That's how we do it Athina!"
So, two decades after what stayed with me from that night was the sheer intensity of the performance and the unique chemistry between the band and the crowd, as well as the ticket stub that I still keep as a memento.
At that time, Faithless had already over a decade of career behind them and sounded more mature and powerful than ever. As it is clearly evident from this performance, despite being an electronic act, they play on stage like a wild rock band. And in my opinion, that’s what made the ’90s stand out: the presence of electronic acts that “rocked” the stage like live bands. Big names like Faithless, The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Underworld, Moby, and Orbital brought raw energy, attitude, and personality to electronic music - something that seems to have become rare in the years that followed. All in all, we owe them a lot.
Enjoy!
